According               to               the               American               Lung               Association,               lung               cancer               is               the               most               deadly               cancer               in               both               men               and               women.

While               the               rate               of               lung               cancer               has               dropped               in               recent               years,               each               year               an               estimated               160,000               people               die               from               lung               cancer.

The               major               cause               of               lung               cancer               is               smoking,               but               other               causes               such               as               exposure               to               radon               and               occupational               exposure               to               carcinogens               are               also               common               causes               of               the               disease.

When               one               is               diagnosed               with               lung               cancer-usually               by               reporting               symptoms               to               a               doctor               who               assesses               your               health               risks               and               symptoms-your               cancer               will               be               assigned               a               "stage."               The               stages               of               lung               cancer               refer               to               whether               or               not               the               cancer               has               spread               to               other               parts               of               the               body               and               the               presence               of               metastases               (tumors)               in               nearby               tissues.

Potential               treatments               for               lung               cancer               are               based               on               the               stage               of               the               lung               cancer,               as               does               your               prognosis.

As               with               all               medical               advice,               it               is               critical               that               you               consult               with               your               physician.
               There               are               four               stages               of               lung               cancer,               the               majority               of               which               is               divided               into               two               sub-stages               (i.e.

3A).

The               stages               of               lung               cancer               are:
               STAGE               1
               1A:               Stage               1A               lung               cancer               means               that               the               cancer               is               small               (3cm               or               smaller)               and               is               in               the               lung               only.

               1B:               Lung               cancer               is               in               Stage               1B               if               the               tumor               is               larger               than               3cm,               the               cancer               has               spread               to               the               bronchus               of               the               lung               or               the               lung               membrane,               and/or               if               the               tumor               has               caused               part               of               the               lung               to               collapse               or               become               inflamed.

STAGE               2
               2A:               Stage               2A               lung               cancer               means               that               the               tumor               is               between               5cm               and               7cm               or               that               it               is               under               5cm               but               the               cancer               has               spread               into               the               lymph               nodes.

               2B:               Stage               2B               lung               cancer               means               that               the               cancer               has               the               same               characteristics               of               Stage               2A-mainly               a               larger               tumor-but               the               cancer               has               spread               into               the               lymph               nodes               or               other               areas               such               as               the               diaphragm               or               chest               wall.

Lung               cancer               can               be               staged               at               2B               even               if               the               tumor               is               smaller               than               5cm               depending               on               how               much               the               cancer               has               spread.

STAGE               3
               3A:               Stage               3A               lung               cancer               is               characterized               by               the               cancer               spreading               to               the               lymph               nodes               on               the               same               side               of               chest               as               the               tumor.

At               this               stage,               the               cancer               may               also               have               spread               to               other               areas               of               the               chest               such               the               heart               or               diaphragm.

               3B:               In               Stage               3B,               lung               cancer               has               spread               to               the               lymph               nodes               on               the               opposite               side               of               the               chest               from               the               tumor               and/or               above               the               collar               bone.

In               addition,               the               cancer               may               have               spread               to               other               areas               such               as               the               heart               or               esophagus.

STAGE               4
               In               Stage               4,               the               cancer               has               spread               into               the               lymph               nodes               or               other               parts               of               the               body               such               as               the               brain               or               liver,               there               may               also               be               fluid               collection               in               the               lungs               that               contains               cancerous               cells,               and               the               cancer               may               have               spread               into               both               lungs.

For               those               seeking               further               information               on               the               stages               of               lung               cancer,               the               National               Cancer               Institute               has               a               helpful               graphical               explanation               of               the               stages               that               shows               how               the               cancer               looks               in               each               of               the               four               stages.

Understanding               the               stages               of               lung               cancer               is               critical               as               the               stage               informs               what               treatment(s)               you               will               receive.

For               example,               in               Stage               1               you               may               receive               surgery               combined               with               chemotherapy               while               by               later               stages-such               as               Stage               4-you               will               not               receive               surgery.

Your               doctor               will               choose               the               appropriate               treatment               based               on               the               stage               of               the               cancer               and               your               own               wishes.
